Lähtökohdat
Kielen toiminnan tiedetään liittyvän avopurennan etiologiaan. Käytännöt kielen aseman ohjaamisessa vaihtelevat, sillä tutkimusnäyttö kielen harjoitteiden ja kielen toimintaa ohjaavien kojeiden vaikutuksesta avopurentaan on vähäistä. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kartoittaa käytäntöjä kielen aseman ohjaamisessa oikomishoitoa tekevillä hammaslääkäreillä Suomessa ja kerätä tietoa heidän kokemuksistaan koskien yhteistyötä puheterapeuttien kanssa.
Menetelmät
Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin sähköisellä Webropol-kyselyllä, joka lähetettiin jäsenkirjeen mukana Suomen Hammaslääkäriseura Apollonian Ortodontian jaoston jäsenille. Kyselyyn vastasi 60 hammaslääkäriä.
Tulokset
Valtaosa (95 %) vastaajista koki kielen toiminnan harjoittamiseen liittyvät tietonsa riittämättömiksi. Vastauksissa toistuivat samankaltaiset käytänteet kielen aseman ohjaamisessa, mikä kertoo yhtenäisistä kliinisistä käytänteistä. Yhteistyötä puheterapeuttien kanssa hyödynnetään, mutta ongelmaksi koetaan puheterapeuttipula ja resurssien vähyys.
Johtopäätökset
Kielen aseman ohjaamiseen osana oikomishoitoa toivotaan lisää tutkimustietoa ja yhtenäisempiä hoitokäytänteitä. Yhteistyötä ja vuoropuhelua puheterapeuttien kanssa toivotaan lisää.
Practices to guide the tongue – a survey for dentists who treat orthodontic patients in Finland
Studies have indicated that there is an association between the position of the tongue and anterior open bite. There are different kinds of practices among dentists to guide the tongue with myofunctional training or appliances that guide the position of the tongue. Scientific evidence on the efficacy of these training methods or appliance therapies is currently very limited, and thereby, dentists who treat orthodontic patients have no consensus among these practices.
The aim of this study was to investigate what kind of practices dentists use when guiding the function of the tongue with their orthodontic patients. Another aim was to inquire how dentists experience the cooperation between speech and language therapists and dentists.
The survey was sent electronically to all members of the Division of Orthodontics of the Finnish Dental Society in December 2021. The questionnaire remained open until the 15th of April 2022. According to the responses, dentists recognize the need for stronger scientific evidence as the base for more unified practices in guiding the tongue as part of orthodontic treatment. The respondents found their knowledge of practices in guiding the function of the tongue to be inadequate. Improved dialogue and mutual educational events were brought up as a means to increase the cooperation between speech and language therapists and dentists.
